At the Institute there is work on various projects in precision engineering, medical technique and microtechnique. In nanotechniques surface machining is worth mentioning. At a airborne ultra precision lath optical surfaces out of metals are machined with an geometrically defined cutting edge. By this, roughness Ra of 2 nm on non-ferrous metals and of about 10nm on hardened steel is achieved.

Further on at the institute structures at rw-heads of disc-drives are applied. These structures improve the start-stop behaviour and the aerodynamics. They are applied by ion-beam etching so far. In the present the approach of machining these structures with excimer laser ablation is tested at the institute. Up to now a structure depth of minimum 20 nm was realized.
